Five Minute Friday is a five minute free write. No rules. No editing. Just writing and allowing your mind to follow its own thoughts. Today’s word is COMMON. You can find the linkup at Kate’s site, Heading Home.
Common brings to mind the every day. Nothing spectacular, just the ordinary, every day.
We have a common language. A common land. A common goal, perhaps.
Common – the more I write it the more wrong it looks! And sometimes, that happens with the every day. When we start to see the common as wrong or right, we can certainly head down the wrong path, even though it looks right.
That reminds me of a book that we have borrowed from our church library for our children to read. It is a book about baptism. It describes sin as a path. That path is common, everyone goes down it, and it is really appealing. There are wonderful refreshments along this path but the more you have of the refreshments, the more you want and the less fulfilled you find yourself. As you continue along this path that is so common to so many people, you finally find yourself on a slippery slope that you cannot avoid and you slip into eternal hell.
Something that is common can easily be a slippery slope leading to places we have no desire to be. So, while common can be a good thing – making it easier to understand or communicate – it can also lead us wrong. So be on your guard and make sure the things that are common are also right.
Don’t forget to go read what others have written and enjoy your Veteran’s Day.
