Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus – hymn

Stand Up Stand Up For Jesus

Often, when I think of what I need to be doing, standing is not a part of my thoughts. Especially since recently standing has been a tad painful. But this song reminds me of an important way in which I do need to stand – I need to stand up for Jesus. He is always with me and He calls for my complete obedience, no matter what earth may throw my way.

In our Sunday evening services recently, our preacher has been speaking on Acts and tonight the lesson was on Acts 21-22. Paul stands up for who he is and what he has done, stating boldly his beliefs in Christ and the resurrection, among other things. But that boldness is something I have been praying for – to be able to boldly stand up for Jesus.

I came across a set of books at the library a couple of weeks ago and have been reading through them. They are a series called Chosen Daughters and are about girls who stood up for Jesus at different times in history. From the persecution of the Scottish Covenanters to those who were killed as heretics during the 16th century in England, these books dive into lives of young girls who live during those times, some are even martyred. The lengths which the girls go to in order to stand up for Christ? Humbling to me that I am a bit scared to even talk to neighbors.

I have been praying for boldness and this series came into my hands. I have been praying for boldness and many of the Bible lessons I have heard lately have been encouraging me to stand up for Jesus. And this song goes right along with that theme. My prayer remains that I will “Stand up, stand up for Jesus.”

At Home.

Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus

words: George Duffield (1858)
music: George J. Webb (1837)

1 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
ye soldiers of the cross!
Lift high his royal banner,
it must not suffer loss.
From victory unto victory
his army he shall lead,
till every foe is vanquished,
and Christ is Lord indeed.

2 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the solemn watchword hear;
if while ye sleep he suffers,
away with shame and fear.
Where’er ye meet with evil,
within you or without,
charge for the God of battles,
and put the foe to rout.

3 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
stand in his strength alone;
the arm of flesh will fail you,
ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the gospel armour,
each piece put on with prayer;
when duty calls or danger
be never wanting there.

4 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
the strife will not be long;
this day the noise of battle,
the next the victor’s song.
To him that overcometh
a crown of life shall be;
he with the King of glory
shall reign eternally.

      Actually, I stepped forward and offered to do something for someone that I did not want to do but have been feeling called to do. So I did it. And it really touched the person so it was definitely a good time to have been bold. I will keep working on it, too. How about you? How are you being bold?
