A Mighty Fortress Is Our God – hymn

Sometimes I just need a reminder that God is ever present, always by my side, and fighting for me. I just need to let Him. But that is my failing – I have a hard time letting him. I am human and have this desire to control whatever I can. I forget that I cannot control life, that God CAN and DOES control life.

I was talking with my Bible class student this morning about God handling things. I told them confidently that God handles all that I need him to plus all the things I don’t even know about that he is handling. God takes care of it. For each and every person. Not just me.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

So, why do I forget that protection? That “fortress” that He is?

This hymn reminds me. God is that protection around me. It doesn’t stop every possible bad thing but God takes me through it, to whatever the other side is. He is walking me through the mission he has set out for me. So why, if he has sent me on this mission, do I not trust Him to take me to the other side?

I will not fear. God does not give me fear. He gives me strength. Through him, I will be cared for. And, in the end, God’s kingdom reigns.

At Home.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

lyrics and music: Martin Luther (1529); translator – Frederick H Hedge (1852)

1 A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

2 Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God’s own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and he must win the battle.

3 And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God has willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

4 That Word above all earthly powers
no thanks to them abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also;
the body they may kill:
God’s truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever!
