I Love To Tell The Story ~ hymn

Are you a story teller? What is your favorite story to tell? I love to listen to a good storyteller tell a good story. There is so much interest generated. The storyteller is fascinating to watch, as her every being is invested in the story that she is sharing. You can feel the intensity, the interest, the fascination when a storyteller is really good at it.

I think of some of my favorite Bible class teachers as storytellers, telling the most wonderful story that exists – that of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. When the story is being told, it is less like a telling and more like a sharing, though. When someone is sharing about Jesus, they are inviting you in to become a part of that story, to be invested in it yourself.

One of my young men in Bible class came to me the other day and absolutely made my year – he told me how much he enjoys being in my Bible class and how much he will miss is next year. That, folks! That is why I teach Bible class. Because the students – whether you are teaching adults or babies, whether at a church building or in your living room or sitting on the sidewalk because that is where you happen to be – the students want to know Jesus. No – they NEED to know Jesus.

This hymn is one that has always touched me but I find it becoming much more poignant as I get older and experience more of life. And as the lyrics mention, those who know it always want to know more. It is a theme – knowing Jesus and striving to follow His footsteps (makes me think of another hymn – Footprints of Jesus that make the pathway glow; I will follow the steps of Jesus where e’re they go. – but then that take me on a tangent, doesn’t it?).

Are you hungering and thirsting to know the story of Jesus? Will it be your theme when Jesus calls his own to glory?

Blessings,
At Home.

I Love to Tell the Story

lyrics: Kate Hankey (1866)
music: William G. Fisher (1869)

1 I love to tell the story
of unseen things above,
of Jesus and his glory,
of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story,
because I know ’tis true;
it satisfies my longings
as nothing else can do.

Refrain:
I love to tell the story,
’twill be my theme in glory,
to tell the old, old story
of Jesus and his love.

2 I love to tell the story;
’tis pleasant to repeat
what seems, each time I tell it,
more wonderfully sweet.
I love to tell the story,
for some have never heard
the message of salvation
from God’s own Holy Word. [Refrain]

3 I love to tell the story,
for those who know it best
seem hungering and thirsting
to hear it, like the rest.
And when in scenes of glory
I sing the new, new song,
’twill be the old, old story
that I have loved so long. [Refrain]
