I Stand Amazed ~ hymn

How marvelous, how wonderful!

What do you think of when you think of the word wonderful? Marvelous? Amazing?

Each of these words seems to be something of the “best”, something that is hard to find the equal of. We talk of many things being wonderful, don’t we? Perhaps a fun activity? Or a really good dinner, maybe. Maybe it was the movie or play or time spend with one of our favorite people.

What about marvelous? Do many people use this word to describe the activities they do. Same with the word amazing. “That movie was amazing!” “What a marvelous movie that was!”

But, really, shouldn’t we reserve those words for things that are really and truly much better than the norm or the average? Should not those words be used to describe the things that are truly better than everything else?

The refrain of this hymn uses these words –

How marvelous! How wonderful!
  And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous! How wonderful!
    Is my Savior’s love for me!

We see the true use of these strong words here – describing the love of God, the love that is so strong, so unbreakable that He sent Jesus to go through unimaginable things because of His LOVE. You guys, His LOVE!

This is what is marvelous.

This is what is wonderful.

My Savior’s love is all this and so much more!

We are blessed, aren’t we?

I Stand Amazed

words and music: Charles H. Gabriel (1905)

1 I stand amazed in the presence
of Jesus, the Nazarene,
and wonder how he could love me,
a sinner, condemned, unclean.

How marvelous, how wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvelous, how wonderful
is my Savior’s love for me!

2 He took my sins and my sorrows;
he made them his very own;
he bore the burden to Calvary
and suffered and died alone. [Refrain]

3 When with the ransomed in glory
his face I at last shall see,
’twill be my joy through the ages
to sing of his love for me. [Refrain]

    It’s kind of how I try to reserve the word awesome for the things of God. Because nothing beats him. I LOVE this song. Thanks! I’ll be humming it now. 🙂

      Yes. Good thing to do – reserving certain words for God and God alone. Thanks for sharing that.
