Give Me The Bible ~ hymn

Give Me The Bible

Foundations are everything, aren’t they? Would you buy a home with a cracked and crumbling foundation? If your home’s foundation began cracking and crumbling, would you ignore it?

What about your own foundation – what you believe, why you believe, and how you are going to live because of it? Do you shore up your foundation daily? Do you check in on it and do the preventative maintenance to keep it strong and solid?

For me, that is a necessity. Do I always do a good job at it? Nope, just like some summers I forget to keep an eye on the house’s foundation and water around it well when the heat and dryness starts to pull it away from the cement. But, I do come to my senses (most of the time fairly quickly) and get back to that daily shoring up, check in, or maintenance, however you prefer to see it.

I read my Bible daily. Sometimes it is 5 minutes; other times it is 5 chapters. Currently, I am in I Samuel. I just finished Daniel a few days ago. James and Hebrews and 1,2,3 John prior to that. The Bible is my check. My foundation maintenance. My reminder of my guide, my help, my hope.

This hymn is a great reminder of the desire we should have for God’s word. May you find that desire for the “star of gladness gleaming” that “cheers the wanderer, lone and tempest tossed.” I know many a people who have made it through unbelieveable though times because their foundation was strong and sure. They did not wait for the tough times to roll around to try to shore up the foundation; it was already sure, solid, ready to hold them up. And so that mine is, I say –

Give Me The Bible!

Blessings,
Lori, At Home.

We sang this hymn in worship this morning. You can hear at 19:49 on this recording of our morning worship. If you want to hear an excellent sermon, keep listening. Bobby is presenting a series on Kingdom Parenting. It is a great encouragement as well as training.

Give Me The Bible

lyrics: Priscilla J Owens (1883)
music: Edmund S Lorenz (1883)

1 Give me the Bible, star of gladness gleaming,
To cheer the wand’rer, lone and tempest tossed.
No storm can hide that radiance peaceful beaming,
Since Jesus came to seek and save the lost.

Refrain:
Give me the Bible,
Holy message shining.
Thy light shall guide me
In the narrow way.
Precept and promise,
Law and love combining,
Till night shall vanish
In eternal day.

2 Give me the Bible, when my heart is broken,
When sin and grief have filled my soul with fear;
Give me the precious words by Jesus spoken,
Hold up faith’s lamp to show my Savior near.
Refrain.

3 Give me the Bible, lamp of life immortal;
Hold up that splendor by the open grave.
Show me the light from heaven’s shining portal;
Show me the glory gilding Jordan’s wave.
Refrain.

      Ooops! Forgot to check that. Sometimes what we do on the screen doesn’t match what is in the book. I normally check if I am linking it to something but didn’t this time.
