Let The Lower Lights Be Burning ~ hymn

Let The Lower Lights Be Burning

We recently visited an exhibit on the Titanic. This hymn was mentioned more than once in the materials at the exhibit and in books that we had checked out about the ship. It has had it going through my mind.

That is just a part of it, though. This is a song that has always caught my attention when we sing it and it just sort of holds on. Ponder for a moment what the chorus is saying

Let the lower lights be burning,
Send a gleam across the wave!
Some poor fainting, struggling seaman
You may rescue, you may save.

This always tends to remind me of the commission that I was given by Jesus in Matthew 28:18- 20. No – he wasn’t physically speaking to me but here and other places in the New Testament, Jesus is giving his believers the instruction to go out and share the gospel with others. This particular passage reads:

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go [a]therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

If I speak up, if I share His word, I may just be the light that someone out there needs to see. There are plenty of folks out there struggling just to keep their head above water and they desperately need to see a light of hope. I pray that I can be that hope.

Blessings,
At Home.

Listen to this song at the Great Songs Chapel.

Let The Lower Lights Be Burning

words and music: Philip P Bliss  (1871)

1 Brightly beams our Father’s mercy
From His lighthouse evermore,
But to us He gives the keeping
Of the lights along the shore.

Chorus:
Let the lower lights be burning!
Send a gleam across the wave!
Some poor fainting, struggling seaman
You may rescue, you may save.

2 Dark the night of sin has settled,
Loud the angry billows roar;
Eager eyes are watching, longing,
For the lights along the shore. (Chorus)

3 Trim your feeble lamp, my brother;
Some poor sailor, tempest-tossed,
Trying now to make the harbor,
In the darkness may be lost. (Chorus)

    interesting lyrics and history. A good call to remember our purpose as well. 🙂
