The man who destroyed her life may be the only one who can save it.

Seven years ago, Maggie Logan (Eyes-Like-Sky) lost everything she knew when a raid on a wagon train tore her from her family. As the memories of her past faded to nothing more than vague shadows, Maggie adapted, marrying a Comanche warrior, having a baby, and rebuilding her life. But in one terrible battle, the U.S. Cavalry destroys that life and she is taken captive again, this time by those who call themselves her people. Forced into a world she wants nothing to do with, Eyes-Like-Sky’s only hope at protecting her child may be an engagement to the man who killed her husband.

Enrolled in West Point to escape his overbearing father, Captain Garret Ramsey finds himself assigned to the Texas frontier, witnessing the brutal Indian War in which both sides commit atrocities. Plagued by guilt for his own role, Garret seeks redemption by taking responsibility for the woman he widowed and her baby. Though he is determined to do whatever it takes to protect them, is he willing to risk everything for a woman whose heart is buried in a grave?

My Thoughts

I really struggled with this story and this particular book. It is really drama dense and the story feels sluggish to me, though I like the main characters just fine. The story that this echos of the young girls taken captive by Indian raids in Texas is really quite familiar to me since I live close to where Cynthia Ann Parker was captured. So, it isn’t the story that is hard but rather way the drama of it all is presented. There are no bright spots in the story and for fiction, I need that in a drama dense story.

I feel the character of Eyes-Like-Sky is pushed to quickly for it be an enjoyable transformation. I think is it accurate that she had only one person willing to allow her the space she needed to acclimate to the new society, yet again, but I found it hard to enjoy the story of the change. I like the grit and determination of her character and her ability to really focus on what she is desiring to accomplish, nothing standing in her way.

I felt like the religious addition to Eyes-Like-Sky’s character was out of place. I would have enjoyed it more if it was added in differently but I do like that it was included.

Overall, this was a fine read. I didn’t mind it but it definitely wasn’t my true cup of tea. I decided to review this since JustReadTours needed more reviews and it was about an era of Texas history that was difficult but I am familiar with. It will definite sit better with those who really enjoy tales of great drama and constant battle between character.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
